ELDERSLIE HIGH SCHOOL SMOKING POLICY
Students found smoking or in possession of cigarettes should be referred to the Deputy Principal, Leading Teacher, or Head Teacher (via a referral slip). The Deputy Principal, Leading Teacher or Head Teacher is then responsible for organising and implementing the follow-up.
The follow-up procedure will involve:
*
completion of a worksheet on a topic selected by the student in the student's
own time. Worksheets are available at different literacy levels and focus
on different aspects of nicotine use and dependency. Counselling and
worksheet completion constitute a detention for the student. The completed
worksheet is to be returned to Deputy Principal, Leading Teacher, Head
Teacher prior to D.E.A.R. the morning after the counselling session.
A student who fails to do this will be required to complete a second
worksheet during the student's lunch-time.
*
parent notification of the offence via letter. This is to be signed and
returned to the Deputy Principal, Leading Teacher, Head Teacher and filed
as a record.
*
a follow-up letter and the student's marked worksheet to be given to the
student in the week following the counselling session. The follow-up letter
reminds the student about the prohibition of smoking on school premises
and warns that suspension may result in the event of a further offence.
*
A follow-up counselling session may be conducted if the student wishes
to see his mentor again with regard to help to cut down on smoking, difficulty
with smoking abstinence while at school, avoiding smoking at school by
coming to have a chat, etc.
The student's mentor will make an informal check with the student to offer support and encouragement with "not smoking at school".
